The DDA

Dashes

The duties have been introduced in three stages:
  • Since 2nd October 1996 it has been unlawful for you to treat disabled people less favourably for a reason related to their disability

  • Since 1st October 1999 you have had to make reasonable adjustments" for disabled people such as providing extra help or making changes to the way you deliver services.

  • From 1st of October 2004 you may have to make other 'reasonable adjustments' to the physical features of your premises to overcome barriers to access. Here is a long but not exhaustive list: Steps, stairways, kerbs, exterior surfaces and pavings, parking areas, building entrances and exits (including emergency escape routes), internal and external doors, gates, toilet and washing facilities, lighting and ventilation, lifts and escalators
